Vicente Gonzalez

Vicente Gonzalez is a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives, currently representing Texas's 34th congressional district. He was first elected to Congress in 2016 to represent the state's 15th district and assumed office on January 3, 2017. Born in Corpus Christi, Texas, Gonzalez grew up in a military family and began his higher education by earning a GED in 1985. He went on to receive an Associate's degree in Banking and Finance from Del Mar College in 1990, a Bachelor's degree in Business Aviation from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in 1992, and a Juris Doctorate from Texas Wesleyan University School of Law (now Texas A&M School of Law) in 1996. Before his tenure in Congress, Gonzalez interned for Congressman Solomon P. Ortiz and established a private law practice, V. Gonzalez & Associates, in McAllen, Texas, in 1997. His legal career spanned two decades, during which he represented individuals and school districts in litigation against large corporations. In the House, he serves on the Committee on Financial Services and is a prominent member of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of fiscally conservative Democrats. Throughout his legislative career, he has focused on delivering federal funding to South Texas and addressing regional challenges related to the border, international trade, and agricultural interests.

Gonzalez is characterized as a conservative Democrat and serves as a co-chair of the Blue Dog Coalition. He supports a healthcare system that ensures quality care is affordable and accessible to both urban and rural communities, while strongly advocating for the protection of Social Security and Medicare. On the economy, he promotes fiscally responsible policies, job creation through small business investment, and reducing workforce barriers by lowering the cost of education and childcare. Regarding immigration and border policy, Gonzalez emphasizes the economic contributions of undocumented workers and supports a strong diplomatic and trade relationship with Mexico. He maintains an "all-the-above" energy strategy as the chairman of the Congressional Oil and Gas Caucus, while also prioritizing environmental reforms such as improving the accuracy of the National Flood Insurance Program. His foreign policy focuses on maintaining American leadership through a combination of strong national defense, fair international trade, and robust diplomacy with allies like Israel and Mexico.
