Pramila Jayapal

Pramila Jayapal is a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Washington's 7th Congressional District. Born in Chennai, India, she moved to the United States alone at age 16 to attend Georgetown University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and Economics. She later received a Master of Business Administration from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management. Before entering politics, Jayapal worked as a financial analyst on Wall Street and in international public health for the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH). Following the September 11 attacks, Jayapal founded the nonprofit "Hate Free Zone" (now OneAmerica), which became the largest immigrant advocacy organization in Washington state. Her career in public office began with her election to the Washington State Senate in 2014, where she served from 2015 to 2017. In 2016, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, becoming the first Indian American woman to serve in the House. In Congress, Jayapal has held significant leadership roles, including serving as the Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus from 2021 to 2025. She is a member of the House Judiciary Committee, where she serves as the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement, and also serves on the House Budget Committee. Throughout her tenure, she has focused on civil rights, economic justice, and legislative efforts to expand access to healthcare.

Jayapal is a prominent advocate for "Medicare for All," having introduced legislation to establish a single-payer healthcare system in the United States. She supports comprehensive immigration reform, including a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and the elimination of private, for-profit detention centers. On economic policy, she has been a vocal supporter of raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour and strengthening labor protections. Her environmental platform includes support for the Green New Deal and climate justice initiatives. In foreign policy, Jayapal often advocates for diplomatic solutions and has sponsored measures to limit executive authority for military action without congressional approval.
