Jimmy Gomez

Jimmy Gomez is a member of the Democratic Party who has represented California's 34th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives since June 2017. Born in Fullerton, California, to Mexican immigrant parents, Gomez was the first in his family to graduate from college. He attended Riverside Community College before earning a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and a Master’s in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School. Before entering elective office, he worked as a labor organizer for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and the United Nurses Associations of California/Union of Health Care Professionals (UNAC/UHCP). Gomez began his legislative career in the California State Assembly, where he served from 2012 to 2017 representing the 51st district. During his tenure in the Assembly, he served as the Majority Whip and later as the Chair of the Appropriations Committee. He was recognized for authoring legislation that expanded California’s Paid Family Leave program and for his work on environmental justice and clean energy. In 2017, he won a special election to the U.S. House of Representatives to fill the vacancy left by Xavier Becerra, who resigned to become the Attorney General of California. In Congress, Gomez serves on the House Ways and Means Committee and the Committee on Oversight and Accountability. He is the founder and chair of both the Congressional Dads Caucus and the Congressional Renters Caucus. His work in the House has focused on issues including tax policy, government oversight, and advocacy for working families. He is also an active member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus.

Gomez maintains a progressive policy platform centered on healthcare, labor rights, and social equity. He is an original cosponsor of the Medicare for All Act and a founding member of the Medicare for All Caucus, advocating for a single-payer healthcare system. On economic issues, he supports raising the federal minimum wage, expanding the Child Tax Credit, and increasing tax rates for high-income earners and corporations. He is a vocal advocate for housing affordability, specifically supporting increased federal funding for rental assistance and protections for tenants. On immigration, Gomez supports comprehensive reform that includes a path to citizenship for undocumented individuals, particularly those protected under the DACA program. He has consistently opposed for-profit detention centers and has voted against funding for border wall construction. Regarding the environment, he advocates for aggressive action to combat climate change and has supported the principles of the Green New Deal, with a specific focus on environmental justice for underserved communities. Additionally, Gomez is a supporter of reproductive rights, including the codification of abortion access into federal law through the Women's Health Protection Act.
