Steven Horsford

Steven Horsford is the U.S. Representative for Nevada's 4th congressional district and a member of the Democratic Party, first elected to Congress in 2012. Born and raised in Las Vegas, Horsford worked multiple jobs as a youth to support his family while his mother struggled with addiction. He attended the University of Nevada, Reno, where he studied political science. Before entering public office, he served as the CEO of the Culinary Training Academy of Las Vegas, where he led workforce development programs and established labor-management partnerships within the hospitality industry. Horsford served in the Nevada State Senate from 2004 to 2012, making history in 2009 as the first African American to serve as the Majority Leader of that body. During his tenure in the state legislature, he focused on economic recovery, clean energy legislation, and healthcare access. In 2012, he became the first Black person to represent Nevada in the U.S. Congress. After losing his seat in 2014, he worked in the private sector before winning re-election to the same district in 2018. He has served as a member of the House Ways and Means Committee and as the chair of the Congressional Black Caucus for the 118th Congress.

Representative Horsford is a vocal supporter of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and has consistently advocated for lowering healthcare costs, including capping insulin prices at $35 per month and limiting annual out-of-pocket prescription drug costs for seniors. On economic policy, he prioritizes workforce training, job creation through infrastructure investment, and housing affordability, introducing legislation to curb corporate speculation in the housing market. Regarding immigration, Horsford supports comprehensive reform, including the DREAM Act and the American Dream and Promise Act, which provide pathways to citizenship. He advocates for climate action by supporting investments in renewable energy and zero-emission transportation. Horsford also maintains a strong pro-choice position, supporting federal protections for reproductive rights, and opposes efforts to reduce funding for Social Security or Medicaid.
