Lucy McBath

Lucy McBath is a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives, currently representing Georgia's 6th Congressional District. Born in Joliet, Illinois, she was raised in a family active in the civil rights movement; her father served as the president of the Illinois NAACP. McBath earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Virginia State University in 1982 and worked as a flight attendant for Delta Air Lines for 30 years before entering politics. Her path to public office began following the 2012 death of her son, Jordan Davis, who was killed in a shooting in Florida. This tragedy led her to become a national spokesperson and advocate for gun safety with organizations like Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action. She was first elected to the House in 2018, becoming the first Democrat to represent her district in decades. Since then, she has navigated several redistricting cycles, serving the 6th and 7th districts while focusing on legislation related to public safety, healthcare, and veterans' affairs. In Congress, McBath serves on the House Judiciary Committee and the Education and the Workforce Committee. She was a key proponent of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act and has successfully sponsored several pieces of legislation, including measures to improve healthcare for veterans. As a two-time breast cancer survivor, she frequently advocates for the protection of the Affordable Care Act and efforts to lower the cost of prescription medications.

McBath's stated positions focus heavily on gun violence prevention, healthcare access, and economic security. She advocates for universal background checks, 'red flag' laws, and a ban on assault weapons. In healthcare, she supports the expansion of the Affordable Care Act, capping insulin prices, and protecting reproductive freedom, including access to contraception and family planning services. Her economic and social agenda includes support for student loan forgiveness, increased funding for public education, and federal investments in infrastructure such as high-speed internet and clean water. She is also a supporter of the Equality Act to provide federal non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ individuals and favors campaign finance reform to limit the influence of corporate interests in politics.
