Jesús García

Jesús "Chuy" García is an American politician and member of the Democratic Party who has represented Illinois's 4th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives since January 2019. Born in Durango, Mexico, he immigrated to the United States in 1965 and settled in Chicago. He attended the University of Illinois Chicago, where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science and a master's degree in urban planning and policy. Before his election to Congress, he built a long career in local and state government, serving on the Chicago City Council from 1986 to 1993, in the Illinois State Senate from 1993 to 1999, and on the Cook County Board of Commissioners from 2011 to 2018. García gained significant prominence during his 2015 campaign for Mayor of Chicago, where he forced the incumbent into the city's first-ever runoff election. Throughout his political career, he has focused on advocating for working-class families, civil rights, and immigration reform. In Congress, he serves on the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and the House Committee on the Judiciary. He is also a prominent member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, where he works on issues of infrastructure equity and financial regulation.

Representative García's policy platform is centered on progressive social and economic reforms. He is a co-sponsor of the Medicare for All Act and a strong advocate for a universal healthcare system. On immigration, he supports comprehensive reform that includes a pathway to citizenship for undocumented individuals and permanent protections for DACA recipients. His economic agenda includes raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour and strengthening labor protections through legislation like the PRO Act. Regarding the environment, he supports the Green New Deal and has called for increased federal oversight of greenhouse gas emissions. As a transportation advocate, he emphasizes the importance of public transit and equitable infrastructure development. He also supports protecting reproductive rights and voting rights, and has expressed foreign policy positions centered on human rights and diplomatic engagement.
