Haley Stevens

Haley Maria Stevens is a Democratic U.S. Representative currently serving Michigan's 11th Congressional District. Born and raised in Rochester Hills and Birmingham, Michigan, she attended American University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and philosophy followed by a Master of Arts in social policy and philosophy. Her early professional career involved field organizing for the Michigan Democratic Party and staff positions on the 2008 presidential campaigns of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Stevens gained national prominence during the Obama administration serving as the Chief of Staff to the U.S. Auto Rescue Task Force, which played a critical role in stabilizing General Motors and Chrysler during the Great Recession. She later worked in the private sector as a director at the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute in Chicago, focusing on industrial technology and workforce development. Stevens was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018 and assumed office on January 3, 2019, successfully flipping a seat previously held by the Republican Party. In the House, Stevens has been an advocate for manufacturing and STEM education, authoring the Building Blocks of STEM Act, which was her first piece of legislation signed into law. She played a key role in the passage of the CHIPS and Science Act and the Butch Lewis Act, the latter of which protected the pensions of thousands of Michigan workers. She currently serves as the Ranking Member of the House Subcommittee on Research and Technology and sits on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, as well as the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party.

Representative Stevens focuses on strengthening the American middle class through industrial policy, advocating for 'Buy American' initiatives and significant investments in domestic manufacturing and R&D. In healthcare, she supports expanding the Affordable Care Act, lowering prescription drug prices, and protecting Medicare and Social Security. Her environmental platform emphasizes securing clean drinking water, replacing lead pipes, and addressing PFAS contamination. Regarding foreign policy, she is a vocal supporter of the U.S.-Israel relationship and focuses on U.S. competitiveness with China through her committee work. Additionally, she supports common-sense gun safety measures, such as universal background checks, and advocates for reproductive rights and the Equal Rights Amendment.
