Rashida Tlaib

Rashida Tlaib was born in Detroit, Michigan, to Palestinian immigrant parents and is the eldest of 14 children. She attended Wayne State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science in 1998, followed by a Juris Doctor from the Western Michigan University Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2004. Before entering elective office, she worked as an attorney for the Sugar Law Center for Economic and Social Justice and served as a staff member for the Michigan State Legislature. Tlaib's political career began in the Michigan House of Representatives, where she served from 2009 to 2014, making history as the first Muslim woman to serve in the state's legislature. During her tenure, she focused on constituent services and environmental issues, notably organizing residents to challenge corporate pollution in her district. After her terms in the state house, she continued her legal advocacy work focusing on social and economic justice issues. In 2018, Tlaib was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a member of the Democratic Party, becoming the first Palestinian American woman in Congress and one of the first two Muslim women to serve in the body. Initially representing Michigan's 13th District, she has represented the 12th District since 2023 following redistricting. She is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America and is recognized as a member of "The Squad," a group of progressive lawmakers in the House.

Rashida Tlaib's policy platform is centered on progressive economic and social reforms. She is a strong advocate for "Medicare for All," supporting a single-payer healthcare system to replace private insurance. On the economy, she supports raising the federal minimum wage, ending corporate tax subsidies, and implementing higher taxes on the wealthy to fund social programs. Her environmental policy focuses on "Environmental Justice," advocating for the Green New Deal and stricter regulations on industrial polluters. Regarding immigration, Tlaib supports a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and has called for the abolishment of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In foreign policy, she is a prominent critic of U.S. military aid to Israel, frequently advocating for Palestinian human rights and calling for a ceasefire in regional conflicts. She also consistently votes against increases to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), arguing for a reduction in military spending in favor of domestic investments in housing and education.
