Angie Craig

Angie Craig is a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party, representing Minnesota's 2nd Congressional District since 2019. Born in West Helena, Arkansas, and raised in a mobile home park by a single mother, she worked two jobs to put herself through the University of Memphis, where she earned a bachelor's degree in journalism. Before entering public service, Craig had a nearly 20-year career in journalism and business, including a decade as an executive at St. Jude Medical, a Minnesota-based medical technology company where she eventually led a workforce of 16,000 employees. Craig first ran for Congress in 2016, narrowly losing to Republican Jason Lewis, before defeating him in a 2018 rematch. Her victory made her the first openly LGBTQ+ person elected to Congress from Minnesota and the first lesbian mother to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives. In Congress, she has established herself as a pragmatic legislator, serving as the Ranking Member of the House Agriculture Committee and a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. She has authored several pieces of legislation aimed at lowering costs for families, including the Affordable Insulin Now Act and the State Health Care Premium Reduction Act.

Angie Craig's policy platform focuses on healthcare affordability, economic relief for the middle class, and protecting civil liberties. She strongly supports the Affordable Care Act and has championed a public option through the Medicare-X Choice Act to lower premiums and increase competition. Her economic priorities include eliminating federal taxes on Social Security benefits, expanding apprenticeship and job training programs, and supporting small businesses and family farmers. On immigration, she advocates for comprehensive reform that includes a pathway to citizenship for DREAMers alongside 'smart border security' measures. She is a vocal supporter of reproductive freedoms, calling for the codification of Roe v. Wade into federal law, and is a prominent advocate for LGBTQ+ equality and voting rights. Additionally, she supports environmental protections to preserve air and water quality and has emphasized the need for bipartisan solutions to address the opioid crisis.
