John Joyce

John Patrick Joyce is a Republican physician and politician representing Pennsylvania's 13th congressional district. Born and raised in Altoona, Pennsylvania, Joyce graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a degree in biology in 1979 and earned his Doctor of Medicine from Temple University in 1983. He completed residencies in internal medicine and dermatology at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he served as chief resident. Before entering politics, Joyce worked at Portsmouth Naval Hospital with the U.S. Navy during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm and subsequently founded a private dermatology practice in Altoona with his wife, Alice, which they operated for over 25 years. Joyce was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018 to succeed retiring Representative Bill Shuster and assumed office in January 2019. In Congress, he serves on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, where he has held leadership roles such as Vice-Chair and Co-Chair of the GOP Doctors Caucus. His committee assignments also include the Subcommittees on Health, Environment, and Communications and Technology. Throughout his tenure, Joyce has focused on healthcare policy, rural broadband expansion, and domestic energy production, representing a largely rural district in South Central Pennsylvania.

Representative Joyce advocates for a conservative, pro-growth economic agenda characterized by lower taxes and reduced regulatory burdens, particularly for the agriculture and energy sectors. As a physician, his healthcare priorities include protecting Medicare, addressing the opioid and fentanyl crisis through his "Homegrown Health Care Initiative," and increasing access to rural healthcare. He is a proponent of American energy independence, supporting the continued use of natural gas and coal while opposing environmental regulations he views as burdensome. On immigration, Joyce supports enhanced border security measures, including the construction of a border wall. His foreign policy stance includes a critical view of the Chinese Communist Party and a focus on national security, though he has voted against certain foreign aid packages, including some military aid to Ukraine. Additionally, Joyce is pro-life and voted against the certification of the 2020 presidential election results.
