Lizzie Fletcher

Lizzie Fletcher is a Democratic politician representing Texas's 7th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives, a seat she has held since first being elected in 2018. Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Fletcher attended Kenyon College, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and earned her J.D. from the College of William & Mary Law School, where she served as editor-in-chief of the Law Review. Before entering public office, she had a distinguished legal career in Houston, starting at Vinson & Elkins and later becoming the first woman partner at the boutique litigation firm Ahmad, Zavitsanos, Anaipakos, Alavi & Mensing (AZA). Her professional background also includes community involvement, such as co-founding Planned Parenthood Young Leaders in Houston. During her tenure in Congress, Fletcher has focused on legislative issues vital to the Houston area, including flood mitigation, infrastructure, and energy policy. She currently serves as the Vice Ranking Member of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and is a member of the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. Fletcher is also a leader within the Democratic caucus, serving as Chair of the Texas Democratic Delegation and holding leadership positions in the Reproductive Freedom Caucus and the Equality Caucus. Her work often emphasizes pragmatic solutions for regional priorities like disaster recovery following Hurricane Harvey and advancing local transportation projects.

Fletcher’s policy positions focus on healthcare, energy, and reproductive rights. She is a supporter of the Affordable Care Act and has advocated for Medicaid expansion and lowering prescription drug costs through the Inflation Reduction Act. On energy, representing a district central to the global energy industry, she promotes a transition to cleaner energy while emphasizing the importance of protecting local jobs and supporting the existing energy infrastructure in Houston. Fletcher is a prominent advocate for reproductive freedom, having lead-sponsored the Ensuring Women's Right to Reproductive Freedom Act and supported the Women's Health Protection Act to codify abortion rights at the federal level. Additionally, she supports comprehensive immigration reform including protections for DACA recipients and advocates for gun safety legislation such as universal background checks and red flag laws.
