Kim Schrier

Kim Schrier is the U.S. Representative for Washington's 8th congressional district and a member of the Democratic Party. First elected in 2018, she became the first pediatrician to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives. Schrier grew up in Los Angeles and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a degree in astrophysics before earning her Medical Degree from the University of California, Davis. She completed her residency in pediatrics at the Stanford University School of Medicine and subsequently practiced medicine for 17 years as a pediatrician in Issaquah, Washington, where she was once named "Best Pediatrician" in the Greater Seattle area by ParentMap magazine. In Congress, Schrier serves on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and the House Committee on Agriculture. Her legislative work frequently utilizes her medical background, focusing on healthcare accessibility, maternal health, and the needs of children. Representing a district that spans the Cascade Range, she has been involved in bipartisan efforts to support both suburban communities and the agricultural interests of rural central Washington, including work on farm bills and rural revitalization agendas.

Schrier's policy platform is centered on healthcare, specifically the protection of the Affordable Care Act and the reduction of prescription drug costs, such as capping out-of-pocket expenses for insulin. A proponent of reproductive rights, she supports federal legislation to protect abortion access and maternal health services.
