Nikema Williams

Nikema Williams is the U.S. Representative for Georgia's 5th congressional district, having first been elected in 2020 to succeed the late civil rights leader John Lewis. A member of the Democratic Party, she assumed office on January 3, 2021. Born in Columbus, Georgia, and raised in Smiths Station, Alabama, Williams graduated from Talladega College, a private historically Black college, with a Bachelor of Arts in biology in 2000. Her early career involved significant work in advocacy and public policy, notably serving as the Vice President of Public Policy for Planned Parenthood Southeast for ten years and later as a Deputy Political Director for the National Domestic Workers Alliance. Before her election to Congress, Williams served in the Georgia State Senate from 2017 to 2021, representing the 39th District. In 2019, she made history as the first Black woman to be elected chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia. In the U.S. House of Representatives, she serves on the Financial Services Committee and the Committee on House Administration. Her legislative focus often centers on voting rights, social justice, and economic equity, continuing the legacy of her predecessor. Williams has also held leadership roles within the Democratic caucus, including serving as a whip for the Democratic Women’s Caucus.

Representative Williams' policy positions are centered on expanding access to healthcare, protecting voting rights, and addressing economic inequality. She is a co-sponsor of Medicare for All legislation and a strong advocate for reproductive freedom, frequently introducing measures to affirm abortion as a human right. On voting rights, she prioritizes passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act to combat voter suppression. Her economic agenda includes raising the federal minimum wage, expanding the Child Tax Credit, and implementing policies to close the racial wealth gap, particularly through affordable housing initiatives. Additionally, she supports environmental protections through the Green New Deal, criminal justice reform, and expanded protections for LGBTQ+ individuals and immigrant communities, specifically Dreamers.
