Delia Ramirez

Delia Ramirez is a Democratic politician serving as the U.S. Representative for Illinois's 3rd congressional district, a position she has held since January 2023. Born and raised in Chicago to Guatemalan immigrant parents, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in justice studies from Northeastern Illinois University. Prior to her career in public office, Ramirez worked for nearly two decades as a community organizer and social service administrator. Her leadership roles included serving as the executive director of the Center for Changing Lives and as board chair for the Latin United Community Housing Association (LUCHA), where she focused on addressing homelessness and housing instability. Ramirez's legislative career began with her election to the Illinois House of Representatives in 2018, where she rose to the position of Assistant Majority Leader and co-founded the Illinois House Progressive Caucus. During her tenure in the state legislature, she was a key advocate for the Reproductive Health Act and successfully led the effort to make Illinois the first state to extend Medicaid coverage to low-income seniors regardless of immigration status. In November 2022, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, making history as the first Latina elected to Congress from the Midwest.
