Robert Menendez

Robert J. Menendez, commonly known as Rob Menendez, is a Democrat serving as the U.S. Representative for New Jersey's 8th congressional district. First elected in November 2022 and sworn into office on January 3, 2023, he represents a district that includes parts of Hudson, Essex, and Union counties. Born in Englewood and raised in Union City, New Jersey, he is the son of former U.S. Senator Bob Menendez and the grandson of Cuban immigrants. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his J.D. from Rutgers Law School, where he served as President of the Student Bar Association. Before his election to Congress, Menendez built a career in law and public service. He practiced business law at the firm Lowenstein Sandler and performed pro bono work for the Lowenstein Center for the Public Interest. In 2021, he was appointed as a Commissioner of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, becoming the first Latino from New Jersey and the first millennial to serve on its board. During his tenure there, he chaired the Governance and Ethics Committee and oversaw the agency's multi-billion-dollar budget. In the House of Representatives, he serves on the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and the Committee on Homeland Security.

Menendez's policy platform focuses on affordability, labor rights, and social equity. He considers healthcare a human right and advocates for protecting and expanding the Affordable Care Act (ACA), lowering prescription drug costs, and codifying reproductive rights. On economic issues, he is a staunch supporter of organized labor, having cosponsored the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act and the Raise the Wage Act. He also introduced the Working Families Task Force Act to address rising costs in childcare and housing. His environmental agenda emphasizes 'environmental justice,' supporting a transition to clean energy and initiatives to protect majority-minority communities from the disproportionate effects of pollution. Regarding immigration, Menendez supports a pathway to citizenship for undocumented residents, protection for Dreamers and TPS recipients, and has called for closing private detention centers. In foreign policy, he has supported bipartisan aid packages for allies including Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, while also advocating for humanitarian assistance in Gaza. He has introduced legislation related to 'economic statecraft' to modernize U.S. national security tools and counter the global economic influence of adversaries like China. Additionally, he is an active member of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and the Bipartisan Task Force for Combatting Antisemitism.
