Seth Magaziner

Seth Magaziner is a Democratic politician serving as the U.S. Representative for Rhode Island's 2nd Congressional District. First elected to Congress in 2022 to succeed retiring Representative Jim Langevin, Magaziner assumed office on January 3, 2023. He grew up in Bristol, Rhode Island, and earned a bachelor's degree in history from Brown University in 2006, followed by a Master of Business Administration from Yale University in 2010. Before entering public office, he began his career as a public school teacher in Louisiana through Teach For America and later worked as an investment professional at Trillium Asset Management. Prior to his congressional tenure, Magaziner served two terms as the General Treasurer of Rhode Island from 2015 to 2023. In that role, he was known for spearheading a statewide school construction initiative and launching the Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank to finance green energy projects. His transition to federal office was motivated by a stated desire to protect democratic institutions and advocate for middle-class economic interests. He currently serves on the House Committee on Homeland Security and the House Committee on Natural Resources.

Magaziner’s policy platform emphasizes economic support for working families, environmental sustainability, and the protection of social safety nets. He is a proponent of the Affordable Care Act and advocates for lowering prescription drug prices while protecting Social Security and Medicare from benefit cuts. On the economy, he supports strengthening unions, raising the minimum wage, and bringing manufacturing jobs back to the United States. He has also introduced legislation to guarantee paid vacation for all workers through the Protected Time Off Act. Regarding the environment, Magaziner focuses on transitioning to clean energy, specifically offshore wind and solar, to combat climate change and lower energy costs. His foreign policy stance includes strong support for international alliances like NATO and continued military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine. On social and domestic issues, he is a vocal supporter of abortion rights, common-sense gun safety legislation, and government ethics reforms such as banning members of Congress from trading stocks and overturning Citizens United.
