Gabe Amo

Gabe Amo is a Democratic U.S. Representative for Rhode Island's 1st Congressional District, first elected in a special election on November 7, 2023. Born in Providence and raised in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, he is the son of Ghanaian and Liberian immigrants. Amo graduated from Moses Brown School before attending Wheaton College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and was named a Truman Scholar. He later received a Marshall Scholarship to study at the University of Oxford, earning a Master of Science in Comparative Social Policy. Prior to his election to Congress, Amo built a career in public service at both the state and federal levels. He served in the Obama administration as a liaison to state and local officials and later worked as the Director of Public Engagement and Community Affairs for former Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo. Most recently, he served in the Biden administration as Special Assistant to the President and Deputy Director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, where he coordinated federal resources for state and local leaders. Amo's legislative work focuses on issues such as global health, veterans' affairs, and economic infrastructure. As the first person of color to represent Rhode Island in Congress, he serves on the House Budget Committee and the Committee on Foreign Affairs. Since taking office, he has co-sponsored legislation like the Retired Pay Restoration Act to support disabled veterans and has advocated for international health partnerships and continued American leadership in global diplomacy.

Amo's policy positions emphasize strengthening the social safety net and maintaining American leadership in global health. He supports protecting and expanding healthcare coverage, opposing cuts to federal healthcare funding and SNAP benefits. In foreign policy, he advocates for robust diplomacy and support for international organizations, including the World Health Organization and the Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness, and Response Accord. He has expressed strong support for aid to Ukraine and international humanitarian efforts. Additionally, Amo focuses on veterans' issues, supporting legislation to restore retirement pay for disabled veterans and initiatives for veteran mental health. He also supports infrastructure investments such as the American Rescue Plan and the Inflation Reduction Act to address economic and environmental challenges.
