Thomas Suozzi

Thomas Richard Suozzi is a Democratic politician serving as the U.S. Representative for New York's 3rd congressional district. Born and raised in Glen Cove, New York, Suozzi is a trained attorney and Certified Public Accountant. He earned a Bachelor of Science in accounting from Boston College in 1984 and a Juris Doctor from Fordham University School of Law in 1989. Before entering public service, he worked as an auditor for Arthur Andersen and as a commercial litigator at Shearman & Sterling. His political career began as the mayor of Glen Cove (1994–2001), followed by two terms as the Nassau County Executive (2002–2009), where he was credited with steering the county through a major fiscal crisis. Suozzi was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2016 and served until 2023. After an unsuccessful bid for Governor of New York in 2022, he returned to Congress by winning a special election in February 2024 to fill the seat vacated by George Santos. Throughout his tenure, Suozzi has established himself as a centrist and a key figure in bipartisan efforts, serving as a co-chair of the Problem Solvers Caucus. He is also a member of the House Committee on Ways and Means, focusing on tax policy and oversight.

Suozzi's policy positions are characterized by a focus on bipartisanship and local economic concerns. He is a prominent advocate for the repeal of the State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction cap, which he argues unfairly burdens New York taxpayers. On immigration, Suozzi supports a strategy of 'order at the border,' which includes increasing border security, streamlining the asylum process, and providing a legal path for 'Dreamers' and long-term undocumented residents who follow the law. He has notably partnered with Republican colleagues on comprehensive reform proposals, such as the Suozzi-King 'Grand Compromise.' In healthcare, Suozzi supports the expansion of the Affordable Care Act, lowering prescription drug costs, and protecting Social Security and Medicare. His environmental platform includes securing funding for the protection of the Long Island Sound and initiatives to provide clean drinking water. On foreign policy, he is a staunch supporter of Israel and has consistently voted for aid to Ukraine, emphasizing the need to hold aggressive regimes accountable. Additionally, Suozzi emphasizes public safety and common-sense gun control measures while maintaining a record of supporting law enforcement funding from his time as County Executive.
