Cleo Fields

Cleo Fields is a Democratic politician currently serving as the U.S. Representative for Louisiana's 6th congressional district. Born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, he earned his Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor degrees from Southern University. Fields made history early in his career by becoming the youngest person elected to the Louisiana State Senate in 1987 at the age of 24. He first served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1993 to 1997 representing Louisiana's 4th district, where he was the youngest member of the 103rd Congress. After his initial congressional tenure, Fields returned to the Louisiana State Senate, serving from 1998 to 2007 and again starting in 2020. In 2024, he was elected to represent the newly redrawn 6th district, returning to the U.S. House for the 119th Congress starting in January 2025. Throughout his career, he has focused on civil rights, education, and community empowerment, founding the Louisiana Leadership Institute to mentor young leaders. His legislative history includes authoring the Delta Initiatives Act and advocating for economic development in underserved regions.

Fields advocates for expanding healthcare access through the Affordable Care Act and has voted against efforts to reduce healthcare subsidies or promote substandard insurance plans. On economic policy, he is a vocal proponent of raising the federal minimum wage to a living wage and supports infrastructure investments such as expanding rural broadband to stimulate job growth. He emphasizes educational equity, supporting increased funding for K-12 schools, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and programs to alleviate student loan debt. Fields also maintains a record of supporting reproductive rights and labor protections, including collective bargaining rights for federal workers. His platform includes environmental justice initiatives and efforts to attract manufacturing to Louisiana while ensuring environmental sustainability for local communities.
