Angela Alsobrooks

Angela Alsobrooks is a member of the Democratic Party and serves as a U.S. Senator from Maryland, having been elected in 2024 and assuming office in January 2025. Born in Suitland, Maryland, she earned her bachelor's degree in public policy from Duke University in 1993 and her Juris Doctor from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1996. Her early career included serving as a law clerk in the Howard County and Baltimore City Circuit Courts before becoming the first full-time Assistant State's Attorney to handle domestic violence cases in Prince George's County. Alsobrooks later held several administrative roles, including education liaison and executive director of the Prince George's County Revenue Authority. In 2010, she was elected as the State's Attorney for Prince George's County, where she served two terms and was credited with overseeing a significant reduction in violent crime. In 2018, she made history as the first Black woman elected as a county executive in Maryland, serving Prince George's County until her election to the Senate. During her tenure as County Executive, she focused on economic development, job creation, and expanding education and healthcare infrastructure, including breaking ground for multiple new schools.

Alsobrooks advocates for healthcare as a fundamental right, supporting expanded access to mental health services and affordable care. Her economic platform emphasizes job creation, a permanent child tax credit, and federal investment in infrastructure through measures like the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. On immigration, she supports comprehensive reform with a pathway to citizenship and protections for DREAMers and TPS recipients. Her environmental policy includes setting federal emissions targets and supporting clean energy tax credits. Additionally, she is a supporter of reproductive rights, pledging to co-sponsor the Women's Health Protection Act, and gun safety legislation, including universal background checks and bans on military-style weapons. In foreign policy, she advocates for diplomacy-first approaches and maintaining the strength of the U.S. military.
