Shomari Figures

Shomari Figures is a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Alabama's 2nd Congressional District. Born and raised in Mobile, Alabama, Figures comes from a family with a deep history of public service; his father, Michael Figures, was a prominent civil rights attorney and state senator, and his mother, Vivian Davis Figures, currently serves in the Alabama State Senate. He earned both his Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor from the University of Alabama. Figures was first elected to Congress in 2024, following a landmark redistricting process that created a new majority-Black district in Alabama, and he assumed office on January 3, 2025. Prior to his election, Figures built an extensive career in federal service across all three branches of government. He served as a law clerk for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri and worked on Barack Obama’s 2012 presidential campaign. His executive branch experience includes serving as the Domestic Director of Presidential Personnel in the Obama White House and as a liaison at the Department of Justice under Attorney General Loretta Lynch. He later served as a legislative counsel for U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown and most recently held the position of Deputy Chief of Staff and Counselor to Attorney General Merrick Garland in the Biden-Harris administration.

Figures focuses on expanding healthcare access, strengthening the economy, and advancing civil rights. He is a vocal advocate for Medicaid expansion in Alabama, arguing that the state's refusal to expand has contributed to the closure of rural hospitals. He supports the Affordable Care Act and has pledged to vote for the codification of Roe v. Wade to protect reproductive rights. On economic issues, Figures emphasizes investments in small businesses, workforce development, and expanding affordable childcare. He has introduced legislation such as the Made in America Jobs Act of 2026 to incentivize the relocation of foreign jobs to the United States and has advocated for tax credits to assist first-time parents. Regarding immigration, Figures supports a 'fact-based' reform approach that addresses the root causes of illegal immigration and visa overstays while also providing resources for border security. In foreign policy, he has supported continued aid to Ukraine through legislation like the Ukraine Support Act.
