Sarah McBride

Sarah McBride is a member of the Democratic Party representing Delaware's at-large congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. Born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware, she graduated from the Cab Calloway School of the Arts and American University, where she served as student body president. Her early career included roles working for Delaware Governor Jack Markell and Attorney General Beau Biden. In 2012, she became the first openly transgender woman to intern at the White House, serving in the Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs during the Obama administration. McBride's political career progressed as she served as the national spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign and became the first openly transgender person to address a major party convention at the 2016 Democratic National Convention. In 2020, she was elected to the Delaware State Senate, where she championed the Healthy Delaware Families Act, establishing a statewide paid family and medical leave program. She also sponsored the Protect Medicaid Act of 2024 to increase funding for the state's Medicaid program. McBride was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2024, becoming the first openly transgender person to serve in the United States Congress.

McBride’s policy priorities focus on healthcare, labor rights, and civil rights. She is an advocate for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and has pushed for the extension of ACA tax credits and the protection of Medicaid funding. She supports universal paid family and medical leave, having co-sponsored federal legislation to update the Family and Medical Leave Act. On economic issues, she emphasizes worker protections, affordable housing, and investing in workforce training. McBride also advocates for climate resilience, the promotion of green technologies, and strengthening public education through mental health resources and media literacy. Additionally, she supports protecting reproductive freedom and expanding non-discrimination protections for the LGBTQ+ community.
