Sarah Elfreth

Sarah Elfreth is a Democratic politician representing Maryland's 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Born in Barrington, New Jersey, she moved to Maryland to attend Towson University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science. She later completed a Master of Public Policy at Johns Hopkins University. Her early professional career included working as the government affairs director for the National Aquarium in Baltimore and serving as a student member of the University System of Maryland Board of Regents. In 2018, Elfreth was elected to the Maryland State Senate, making her the youngest woman ever elected to that body at the age of 30. During her tenure from 2019 to 2025, she represented District 30 (Anne Arundel County) and became known for her legislative productivity, successfully passing over 90 bipartisan bills. She served in leadership roles including Chair of the Pensions Subcommittee and Chair of the Joint Committee on the Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays Critical Areas. Additionally, she has served as an adjunct professor at Towson University. Elfreth was first elected to Congress in November 2024, succeeding retiring Representative John Sarbanes. Upon taking office in January 2025, she became the youngest woman ever elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Maryland. She currently serves on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Natural Resources Committee.

Elfreth focuses extensively on environmental protection, particularly the restoration of the Chesapeake Bay and addressing climate change through clean energy and coastal resilience. On healthcare, she supports the Affordable Care Act, advocates for lowering prescription drug costs, and has expressed support for a 'Medicare for All' framework to expand coverage. Her economic platform emphasizes affordability for working families, including expanding access to affordable childcare, reducing student loan burdens, and supporting federal workers' rights. She is a proponent of reproductive rights, having co-sponsored a constitutional amendment in Maryland to enshrine abortion access and supporting federal efforts to codify the protections of Roe v. Wade. Additionally, she supports gun safety measures, such as stricter handgun permit requirements and limits on carrying firearms in public spaces.
