John Mannion

John W. Mannion is a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives representing New York's 22nd Congressional District. A lifelong resident of Central New York and the grandson of Irish immigrants, Mannion was born in Syracuse and raised on Tipperary Hill. He earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from Binghamton University and a Master of Science in secondary science education from the State University of New York at Oswego. Before entering politics, he spent nearly three decades as a public school science teacher, teaching Advanced Placement biology and chemistry in the West Genesee and Syracuse City school districts. He also served as the president of the West Genesee Teachers’ Association for eight years. Mannion’s political career began in the New York State Senate, where he represented the 50th District from 2020 to 2024. During his tenure, he served as the founding chairman of the Senate Committee on Disabilities, where he successfully advocated for cost-of-living increases for direct support professionals and expanded employment programs for individuals with disabilities. He was also a lead co-sponsor of the "Green Chips" legislation, which provided economic incentives to attract the semiconductor industry to Central New York, most notably a major investment by Micron. In November 2024, Mannion was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, defeating incumbent Brandon Williams to represent a district that includes Syracuse and Utica. In Congress, he has emphasized his commitment to middle-class economic growth, environmental protection, and strengthening the healthcare system. He remains a member of the Democratic Party and continues to focus on issues such as labor rights and education.

Mannion supports safeguarding and expanding the Affordable Care Act, advocating for a public option for low-income earners while maintaining the choice of private insurance. He has consistently supported reproductive rights, including the codification of abortion access at the federal level. On education, he proposes linking student loan forgiveness to public service careers and has supported freezing tuition for state university systems. His environmental platform includes support for nuclear energy as a clean energy source and investments in water quality protection. Additionally, he advocates for gun safety measures such as universal background checks and bans on ghost guns, and remains a staunch supporter of labor unions and disability rights.
