Eugene Vindman

Eugene Vindman is a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives representing Virginia's 7th Congressional District. Born Yevgeny Semyonovich Vindman in Soviet Ukraine, he immigrated to the United States as a refugee in 1979. He attended Binghamton University, where he participated in the ROTC program, and later earned a Juris Doctor from the University of Georgia School of Law and a Master of Science from Central Michigan University. Vindman served in the U.S. Army for 25 years, reaching the rank of colonel. His military career included roles as an infantry officer, a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division, and a judge advocate. He also served in the Iraq War and held various legal and ethics positions. Vindman gained national prominence in 2019 while serving as a senior ethics official on the National Security Council (NSC) at the White House. He and his twin brother, Alexander Vindman, reported concerns regarding a phone call between then-President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, an event that became central to the first impeachment of President Trump. Following his removal from the NSC in February 2020, Vindman continued his military service until his retirement in 2022. Post-retirement, he worked as a consultant investigating war crimes in Ukraine. In 2024, Vindman ran for the seat vacated by Abigail Spanberger and was elected to the House of Representatives on November 5, 2024. He assumed office on January 3, 2025. In Congress, he serves on the House Committee on Agriculture and the House Committee on Armed Services. His career transition from the military to the legislature was largely defined by his commitment to government accountability and national security.

Vindman's policy platform focuses on strengthening the middle class, protecting reproductive rights, and ensuring national security. On healthcare, he supports expanding the Affordable Care Act, lowering prescription drug costs for civilians and military families, and protecting Medicare and Medicaid. His economic priorities include cutting taxes for working families, cracking down on anti-competitive business practices, and investing in infrastructure. He advocates for an energy strategy that transitions toward a green economy and clean energy to combat climate change while aiming to lower utility bills. Regarding immigration, Vindman supports securing the border while maintaining humanitarian decency, and he has expressed support for humanitarian parole for those fleeing conflict, such as Ukrainians. On foreign policy, he is a staunch supporter of international alliances like NATO and advocates for continued military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine. He also emphasizes the protection of voting rights and government integrity, frequently citing his background as a whistleblower and ethics official as the foundation for his commitment to transparency and the rule of law.
