Suhas Subramanyam

Suhas Subramanyam is the U.S. Representative for Virginia's 10th Congressional District, first elected in 2024 as a member of the Democratic Party. Born in Houston, Texas, to Indian immigrant parents, he earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Tulane University and a Juris Doctor from Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law. His early career included serving as a technology policy advisor in the White House during the Obama administration, where he led a task force on technology policy, and working as a technology and regulatory attorney. He also has a background in community service, having volunteered as an EMT and firefighter in Loudoun County. In 2019, Subramanyam became the first South Asian American elected to the Virginia General Assembly. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 2020 to 2024, representing the 87th district, and later in the Virginia Senate for the 32nd district from 2024 until his transition to federal office. During his tenure in the Virginia legislature, he focused on environmental protection, healthcare affordability, and consumer rights. He was sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives on January 3, 2025, succeeding retiring Representative Jennifer Wexton. In Congress, Subramanyam has focused on government oversight, transparency, and technological innovation. He has introduced legislation aimed at increasing oversight of executive-led efficiency initiatives and has been a vocal defender of the economic contributions made by skilled immigrants. His work is characterized by an emphasis on climate action and environmental justice, continuing the legislative focus he maintained during his time in state government.

Subramanyam's policy positions emphasize healthcare accessibility and affordability, including support for Medicare's ability to negotiate prescription drug prices and expanding mental health services. On environmental issues, he is a champion of climate action, advocating for renewable energy, clean air and water protections, and environmental justice. He is a strong supporter of reproductive rights, favoring federal protections for abortion access and in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Regarding immigration, he supports comprehensive reform that includes enhanced border security alongside streamlined pathways for skilled workers and the removal of country-specific green card caps. His economic platform focuses on fostering innovation and supporting small businesses, while his governance priorities include campaign finance reform and increasing transparency in government operations.
